For the period sci-fi feature film 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow', I had the opportunity to design and create a pivotal montage sequence. Drawing inspiration from classic 1930s Hollywood montages, I simulated the atmospheric look of the era through considered animation design.
Using After Effects, I brought vintage newspapers to life by animating their movement as if captured live on set. Telephone poles were custom designed and animated to complete urban landscapes. Dissatisfied with stock vector maps, I hand-illustrated my own stylized world map for animation within the montage.
Moving arrows, concentric circles and animated text over stills of devastated cities advanced the sequence's narrative in lyrical fashion. Contrasting motion graphics elevated destruction while maintaining the illusion viewers had been transported back in time.
